How Oyerinde Died - Pathologist
Principal private secretary to the Edo State Governor, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, who was attacked by assailants last May, died of “hemorrhagic shock” from “multiple close range gunshots to trunk,” a consultant pathologist has said. Oyerinde was shot by gunmen in Benin in the early hours of May 4, 2012, and was pronounced dead shortly after.
In the autopsy report on Oyerinde exclusively obtained by Daily Sun, the Consultant Pathologist, Dr. W. O. Akhiwu said the multiple gunshots from shotgun type “lacerated trunk viscera and vessels” commonly called intestinal organs. According to the pathologist, the shotgun used on the late aide caused at least 12 internal injuries and 11 external ones. The pathologist’s report might be key to unlocking the murder weapon.
The police claimed it was a shotgun. On its part, the State Security Service (SSS) insisted it was an Europa Magnum pump action. The pathologist, whose report was dated May 15, 2012, also reported seeing about 100 millilitres of “partially digested rice meal” in Oyerinde’s stomach, suggesting that may have been his last meal.
The internal injuries, Akhiwu, a fellow of the West African College of Pathologists, noted, included “soft tissue haemorrhage extending from the right cheek to the right temple with right temporal subgaleal haemorrhage.”
In the autopsy conducted on May 9, 2012 at Stella Obasanjo Women and Children Hospital, Benin, the pathologist said he noticed soft tissue haemorrhage of the left hypochondrion on the left hip and a fracture at the left pelvic brim.
The report, which was co-signed by another Consultant Pathologist, Dr. Victor Ekanem, added noticing laceration of Olaitan’s spleen, iliac vessels and urinary bladder, and “multiple small intestinal, mesenteric and descending colon pellet lacerations.” The external injuries, according to the pathologist, included a “clean incised wound running obliquely from the right cheek to the right temple.”
This injury, said Akhiwu, measured 10.4 centimetres. The pathologist said Oyerinde had a “small satellite puncture wound on the cheek” below the first injury measuring about 0.6 centimetres in diameter. Another “gunshot entry wound” of about 8.2 centimetres long, he further noted, was on Oyerinde’s left lower anterior chest.
The pathologist said he saw “three other puncture wounds around (3) above each measuring 0.6 cm in diameter,” and that two of these were “superolateral to (3) above while one is medial.”
The pathologist also recalled noticing a 10cm “gunshot entry wound above the left hip,” another two puncture wounds of about 0.6cm in diameter “also above the left hip.” The murdered aide, added the pathologist, bore “two puncture wounds, each about 0.6cm on the posterolateral upper arm.”
He described Olaitan’s body as consistent with a 44-year old man’s, with “an old scar on the medial left foot extending up to above the left medial ankle.”
The report listed those who witnessed the autopsy as including the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Peter Ugbodaga, Oyerinde’s brother, Lukman and Dr. O. N. Igbinogun, for the deceased family and the late aide’s bosom friend, Rev. David Ugolor.
