Ex-Militant Leaders Seek Completion of East-West Road

Former Niger Delta militant leaders have expressed worry over the delay in the completion of the East-West Road.

They expressed disappointment in the inability of President Goodluck Jonathan to complete the road reconstruction project.

In an electronic mail on Wednesday, the former militants, who spoke under the auspices of the Forum for Peace in Niger Delta, said they were uncomfortable with the slow pace of work on the project.

They expressed shock over the disposition of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, noting that rather than wage a media war with the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, the minister should concentrate on how to fix the road.

The statement by the leader of the forum, Reuben Wison (aka General Pastor), and two others, the ex-militants added that the President’s slow action might affect the integrity of the Ijaw in future.

They questioned the role of the Adviser to the President on Research, Mr. Oronto Douglas, saying, “He used to be a vibrant activist before joining the government, but could not advise the president properly”.

They added, “It is very disappointing that till date, Jonathan cannot fix the East-West Road. It is equally painful that he cannot tackle the issues of insecurity in the country.

“We do not want to mention the shameful neglect of the Koluama people of Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State, who have suffered so much deprivation as a result of last year’s Chevron gas explosion.”
