2015: APGA Adopt Jonathan

The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, on Wednesday said it would set up a committee to come out with modalities on how to adopt President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole candidate in the 2015 general elections.

The party said the planned adoption would be made public during its national convention, which has been scheduled to take place later in the year after the Independent National Electoral Commission would have released the notice of election in line with the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

National Secretary of APGA, Alhaji Sani Shinkafi, said this during the Nigeria Political Parties Discussion Series on “The roadmap to 2015, party discipline and internal democracy,” organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development.

Shinkafi said, “If we don’t have a candidate to run for election in 2015, we will have no option than to review the adoption we had made in 2011 as our sole candidate. We are going to constitute a committee to sit down and see how we can come out with modalities on how we will adopt him (Jonathan).

“We did the same thing in 2011 unconditionally, without negotiating for anything, monetary or political benefits. At the same time, we are going to sit down and review the adoption and if we see that we will re-endorse him, we will do that in our national convention.”

Also at the forum, the National Women Leader of Labour Party, Mr. Ebere Ifendu, said the party would also review its position “and where we see that he (Jonathan) is not doing well, because what we want to achieve is the common good of the common man, we will make our position known.”

”We have not adopted him for 2015; we gave him support during the last election. In 2015, we are going to review our decision of 2011. If there are issues in which we feel that he didn’t do well, we will take our position, and if there is need for us to produce our own presidential candidate, why not?” she added.
