FG Reviews Education Policy To Accommodate Flood Victims

The National Policy on Education (NPE) is currently being reviewed by federal government to take care of children sacked from schools by disasters.

Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Professor Godswill Obioma who is chairing the high level committee reviewing the official document said many schools have been turned to refugee camps and there should be an education policy for the affected children in those communities.

The NPE was last reviewed in 2007, and Obioma said based on the recommendations of the Presidential Task Team on Education, the policy needed to be brought up to date with current changes in the society.

He said as nations approach 2015 deadline for Internationally Agreed Goals- Education for All and Millennium Development Goals- they are redefining these goals and Nigeria should not be an exception.

Obioma also said federal government wants to make it a matter of policy that all children must attend pre-school by introducing one year in the 6-3-3-4 education system.

The committee has six weeks to complete its assignment and submit a draft blue print by November.
