FRCS To Launch New Commercial Drivers’ License

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will on Monday formally flag off a new commercial drivers’ license as part of its plans to restore the integrity of the driver’s license.

Details of the launch indicate that the Minister of Transportation, Senator Idris Uma will be a special guest, while the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba will be the chairman at the occasion.

It is expected to attract stakeholders in road safety and the transport sector.

According to the Corps Public Education Officer, Jonas Agwu, applicants for commercial, "E" class, driver’s license must attend government certified driving schools and undergo medical test at any government hospital.

Thereafter, they can apply online and print the form at http://www.nigeriadriverslicense.org before proceeding to the one-stop-shop at States Board of Internal Revenue or Drivers’ License Centres for further payment and collection of temporary license.

The temporary driver’s license will last for 60 days to allow for verification of owners’ data before production of permanent driver’s license with a three-year duration.

The corps has about 100 drivers’ licensing centres presently operational in all states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, out of 140 centres spread across the country.

In a related development, the Corps Public Education Officer has reiterated the FRSC notification to the Nigerian motoring public to ensure transition from the old number plate to the new one as, according to him, "all old number plates and drivers’ licenses will cease to be valid from October 1, 2013."

Jonas also advised vehicle owners not to wait till the expiry date of 30 September, 2013 but to follow appropriate channels to procure their number plates by visiting http://www.nvisng.org to fill and print out a form before proceeding to the one-stop-shop at States Board of Internal Revenue or Drivers’ License Centres to further process payment and collection of the new number plate and driver’s license.
