Tukur Was Not Joking - He Files Suit Against New PDP Faction Leaders

It turned out that yesterday's threats by Bamanga Tukur, the national chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have materialized as he has instituted a court case against some of the rival National Executive officials of the party led by Abubakar Baraje at an Abuja High Court.

The suit followed Tukur's promise to make everyone associated with the new PDP faction "face the full wrath of the law”.

Tukur faction is seeking to jail Baraje, Oyinlola and Jaja for a minimum of one year each for allegedly violating a judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Besides, some of the PDP members loyal to Tukur filed a similar suit in Lagos.

On Wednesday, September 4, a suit with the number FHC/ABJ/50412013 was instituted by Adebayo Dayo and Semiu Sodipo for themselves and on behalf of Executive Committee of the PDP in Ogun State. It asks the court to convict former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the new faction, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to prison for one year, and to convict the chairman of the new faction, Baraje, and his deputy, Sam Jaja, for the same offence.

In Tukur’s suit instituted at the Abuja High Court, the applicants ask the court to jail Oyinlola and the rest for contempt. He alleged that they committed a contempt against the court in its judgement of January 11. Tukur is also seeking the relief for an order of the court nullifying the appointment of Oyinlola as national secretary of the PDP.

Counsel for Tukur's PDP, Mr. Ajibola Oluyede, who made the court papers available to journalists at a briefing in Lagos, said he was directed by his faction to file the contempt suit.

Oluyede added that he had filed a preliminary objection against the suit filed by the Baraje faction at a Lagos High Court, Ikeja, who had filed the suit seeking an order to restrain Tukur and other members of his executive council from further parading themselves as officials of the PDP.

It will reminded, on Saturday, August 31, a new faction, chaired by Abubakar Kawu Baraje and consisting of seven of the party’s 23 governors, has announced that it has taken over the party.
