Governor Suntai needs rest to fully recover, workload is dangerous

The return of the Governor Danbaba Suntai in late August,2013, and his subsequent attempts to win back the governing position in Taraba State have made numerous headlines and are named controversial by politicians, scholars and ordinary people of Nigeria. His health condition has been widely discussed since October, 2012, when the news of the terrible plane crash was made public. But what do the doctors at the Seaview Hospital and Rehabilitation Home in Staten Island, New York, U.S., where the ailing Suntai received medical treatment, have to say on the subject?

According to the source at the Seaview Hospital and Rehabilitation Home, Taraba State Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai needs a rest -- and a good one.

The source disclosed that, among the recommendations handed to his family and officers, the importance of having a good rest was stressed, due to what happened to the Governor and the shock and trauma he had been through over the last ten months.

Suntai suffered from Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI), one of the most common and devastating types of traumatic brain injury. During the rehabilitation period, the source narrated, Suntai often relapsed into and out of bouts of trauma.

To fully recover, people who suffer from DAI need absolute rest both of mind and of the body for a long period of time.

When the medical source heard that Suntai fights to resume his duties in Taraba State, he expressed his strong disapproval and advised against that. Playing politics with one's health is very dangerous to their overall life, the source explained, and, if Suntai is "too tossed here and there", there is a danger of him entering a sudden state of seizure and going into morbidity. This often happens to patients with traumatic brain injuries, the source added.

Suntai should not be involved in any stressful activities until he has been certified fit by doctors, and his case is "not hopeless," the medical official assured.

"But if what you're saying is true, then I am disappointed in all those who were at the hospital with him, who all saw his medical referral papers from the Hannover Medical School Hospital, Hanover, Germany, all lined out in thick yellow ink: 'Patient must be allowed to rest.'

However, the source said Suntai is "a very fragile case," and sternly suggested that all the instructions by his medical doctors should be obeyed and followed.

Another medical official, hearing that Suntai is being made to work, spoke in similar manner: "My advice is, I will say, not now. Let him have the prescribed rest. He has only one life to live... Only medical doctors can certify him fit and up. No, he can't work just yet."

The source also recalled the time when Suntai was being treated at the hospital, guessing that sometimes Suntai tried to talk about the plane crash, and many times, he looked "lost and hurt". But he was mostly quiet during his period of rehabilitation.

"All the way from the Hannover Medical School (MHH), the university medical centre in Germany, one of the strongest points on his medical file is that he must be allowed comprehensive rest. Too bad, this is the vital part your country, Nigeria, seems to be toying with," the medical official lamented.

"And quite often too, he was like a man under a spell because after that time, he was never able to make perceptible comments till he left the hospital.

"However, like I told you, his case is not hopeless. The man will get over his situation if only all the medical instructions are adhered to."
