An aide of the first lady, who sought anonymity, as they have not been authorised to speak on the matter yet, said Mrs. Jonathan is devastated by the news of the death. The aide confirmed that Mrs. Iwarioba was the foster mother of Mrs. Jonathan as the first lady’s biological mum died several years ago.

Mrs. Iwarioba, who was fondly referred to as (Sisi Mama), died in a car crash on Monday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

She was reported to have died in an auto crash at Elele in Rivers State while on her way to neighbouring Bayelsa State. Her body was deposited at the Kpaima Mortuary on Elechi Beach, Mile One, Diobu, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, around 6 p.m., by a Rivers lawmaker, Evans Bipi, accompanied by many policemen.

Presidency sources also confirmed that the deceased was flown to Germany in April to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment,

“The First Lady was indeed very devastated by the sad news. We are expecting her back to the country tomorrow,” a presidential aide said.

Mrs. Jonathan was said to be so devastated by the news that she was unable to attend to scheduled engagements.
