Ondo By-Election : Militants Hold INEC Staff Hostage, SEE Why

Militants suspected to be thugs have been reported to have prevented officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from holding elections in Arogbo Ward II of Ondo State.

Sources told newsmen that the militants were armed with pistols and refused the INEC ad-hoc staff into the polling unit.

It was gathered that many voters who had arrived for accreditation were said to have been stranded, but hoped that the election might commence early.

An eye witness informed that the people of the area were making use of militants to protest the lack of government projects in the area.

They said that since the inception of the Labour Party administration led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, no meaningful development projects have come to the area, claiming that they are 'living under a condition of hardship'.

An INEC ad hoc staff, who spoke at the entrance of the polling unit, confirmed that some aggrieved youths suspected to be militants had barred them from carrying out their functions.

Also in New Jerusalem in Arogbo, journalists and voters were chased out of the polling units as the youth said they had discovered that INEC had cooperated with some political parties to issue fake voters cards.
