How I Stopped Being Gay - True Life Story By Naij.com Reader

Is homosexuality really a conscious choice? Could one be "cured" of their "unnatural" urges? Naij reader Ahmed has sent his life story to info@naij.com, sharing his experience. Please read his message and leave a comment below.

He discovered he had feeling for guys when he was about 14 years old. He describes it as a natural feeling, probably the one heterosexual boys start developing towards girls at their age. At first, he says, it came as a shock. He would talk to his friend about the issues totally unrelated to sex, but his mind would often wander to those areas.

Ahmed would often ask himself if something was wrong with him. He thought he was going mad for having feelings for boys.

He says the lesson he has learnt was not that gay is a sort of a "demon possession," but rather an emotional breakdown which cannot be cured by going to church or to a mosque. This sort of mood is similar to being sad: you fight the very reason for being in such an emotional state.

Ahmed says whenever he hears about someone in any country where it is legal to be gay has homosexual experience just for fun or for the sake of experiment, he feels remorse because he would have given anything not be a gay person.

It was horrible for Ahmed to realize he was gay also because of his religion. As a Muslim, he knew that Islam teaches never to act on one's homosexual feelings and urges. He also abstained from any form of sex before marriage. He says he would love to have children one day and a nice family. However, the possibility of not having an erection for his future wife scared him.

Luckily for him , he says, he has started to have sexual feelings for girls as he grew up, although he admits they are forced sometimes.

Now, Ahmed says, he is almost 30. As the years are passing by, he does not get so aroused by men anymore and has less fantasies about seeing them naked.

He hopes he would one day be free and happy for overcoming all those homosexual urges.

He was happy to learn homosexuality is now being criminalized in Nigeria, happy for the country moving in thr right moral way.

Ahmed says he would never judge anyone for realizing they have gay feelings, as he knows what they are going through. However, he says, he would judge them for remaining or turning gay when they could have tried their best not to choose this lifestyle.

He expresses hope that his lifestyle will inspire others to fight harder and change, to be determined. He advises people to give emotional support for gay persons and not to see them as monsters, to appreciate their trust and help them step onto the right path.
