Lagos State Government Plans To Acquire Farmlands In The North

The Government of Lagos State announced it has plans to acquire farmlands in some states in the northern part of the country for crop and livestock production.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Co-operatives, Mr Gbolahan Lawal, disclosed this at a ministerial briefing in Ikeja, on April 17, 2014, Thursday.

He noted that the government intends to boost food supply, reminded that farmlands in Osun, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had already been acquired for similar purposes.

Lawal noted that only 10 % of foods consumed in the state were produced locally and the rest were sourced from other states. The state government hopes to improve the situation and boost production to 25% by 2018.

The key initiatives are establishment of poultry in Ikorodu and 10,000 tonnes per annum capacity fish estate in Epe area of Lagos.

The completed projects include establishment of crop estate in Agbowa and a vegetable estate in Badagry.

At least 400 farmers got new knowledge in Lagos Agriculture Youth Empowerment Scheme.

Lawal said the government was also facilitating loans to traditional farmers and supporting them with subsidised inputs to enhance their productivity.

The commissioner added that the government was committed to ensuring food security in the state and would continue to pursue efforts geared towards achieving it.
