20 Injured As Church Building Collapses In Bayelsa

No fewer than 20 persons were injured in the building of National Apostolic Church of Nigeria, in Aguadama-Epie community of Bayelsa state following the heavy rain storm which occurred yesterday.

The church building, it was gathered, collapsed at about 10:30am causing chaos in the neighbourhood. However, no life was lost, but property worth millions of naira were lost to the havoc caused by the rainstorm.

It was learnt, the rain pulled off the roofs of some buildings in the capital city and blew off the electricity poles on Sani Abacha expressway causing traffic gridlock in the area.

According to witnesses, most of the trapped victims were semi-skilled workers, who had rushed to the uncompleted church building for shelter during the downpour.

It was, however, learnt that by the time the Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd) and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara, led a team of government officials and Julius Berger rescue team to the scene, sympathizers had rescued those trapped in the rubbles.

The state Commissioner for Works, Mr. Lawrence Erhwudjafo, while speaking with newsmen at the scene announced that the state government will invite the founder of the church to answer questions for erecting a poor and substandard structure.
