Presidency faults Shettima on Boko Haram

Governor of Borno state Kashim Shettima lacks expertise to allege that Boko Haram is better armed that the Nigerian military, the Presidency has said.

This position was expressed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyen Okupe who addressed journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

Shettima had spoken after two recent attacks on villages in Borno that had left nearly 200 people dead. 

The Presidency also rejected the governor’s claim that the country is at war.

Instead, Okupe said, Nigerian is experiencing is a "guerrilla warfare with all its unpredictability."

The Special Assistant further said that Shettima's statements "based purely on a civilian perception of the situation at hand." 

According to Okupe, Borno governor lacks expertise to "classify the effectiveness of any weapon."

Okupe also said that Nigerian army is one of the best equiped in Africa.

He recalled that in 2014 nearly 22 per cent (N1 trillion) of the Nigeria's budget is allocated for the military and other security agencies.
