Outrage As President Jonathan Abandons Chibok Visit

The cancellation of President Goodluck Jonathan's supposed planned trip to Chibok, where over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped, has been met with a lot of angry reactions.

This came as parents of the abducted schoolgirls who had shown up at the Government secondary school, awaiting the arrival of the President on his sympathy visit were left standing frustrated and disappointed when he didn't show up at the end of the day.

A close associate of the Borno State governor Kashim Shettima, who chose to stay anonymous revealed that even though there was never any official advice from the President to the Borno state government on any planned visit to Chibok or Borno state by the President Jonathan scheduled for yesterday, the state government had made preparations to receive the president to the state.

The Borno state government has also not made any official reaction to the cancellation of the supposed visit since the news came up and after the President didn't show up.

The parents of the abducted girls were not the only ones left disappointed by the President's cancelled trip as other state government officials and traditional rulers had also be waiting expectantly under the scorching sun to receive President Jonathan, only to be told hours later that the visit had been cancelled, leaving them frustrated.

Reacting to the development, one of the people whose daughter had been abducted expressed his dismay to newsmen, stating that the disappointment was not so new to them.

“We are not disappointed by the cancellation of the visit, because, already we parents of the missing school girls have lost confidence in the government of the day for not rescuing our innocent daughters who were kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists over a month ago.

“We have now put our faith in God Almighty whom we believe is the only one that will rescue our daughters.’’

However, the trip was said to have been cancelled due to concerns about unfavourable security reports.

President Goodluck Jonathan had been facing a lot of criticism for not visiting the government secondary school in Chibok where members of terrorist group Boko Haram carried out a mass kidnap of over 200 girls about a month ago.

However, after he failed to show up in Borno following announcements that he had scheduled a visit to the school, his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, came out to declare that there were no such plans made by the presidency and the news of his visit were all rumours - a statement which Jonathan's presidential aides have also debunked yesterday claiming that Abati was only trying to "save face" as the visit was cancelled due to security reasons.
