Group Condemn Tinubu Statement Against Yoruba Obas

Senator Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was on Monday, given seven days by a Yoruba rights’ group to apologise to Yoruba traditional rulers (Obas).

The group issued the ultimatum in reaction to a statement credited to the former senator, whom allegedly described majority of Yoruba traditional rulers as "useless” and “sell-outs".

This was made known in a statement issued and signed by the group's secretary, Wasiu Adeyemi, who requested Tinubu to make a public denial of the statement.

According to the group, the statement by the APC national leader was an insult to the entire Yoruba race, aimed at ridiculing and bringing the entire traditional institution to disrepute and odium.

"Consequently, we have given Tinubu seven days to deny the statement by putting up full page colour advertisement in five major newspapers, apologising to our respected traditional rulers" the group said. "Failure to do so shall cause us to embark on a campaign throughout the federation during electioneering campaign".

The group expressed the belief that Yoruba obas were gods on earth and so, deserved to be adored.

"Our royal fathers are very special to us and there are lots of emotions attached to our relationship with them. In fact, in the Yoruba tradition, they are regarded as representatives of The Almighty on earth. We would, therefore, not stand by and watch as a group of irresponsible politicians drag their names in the mud" it added.

The former governor was alleged to have made the assertion last Friday, in Ijebu-Ode, during the Jumat prayer session to mark the 80th birthday of Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
