Why War Against Boko Haram Is Not Effective In Nigeria-Arch Bishop

The Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Arch Diocese of Calabar, Archbishop Joseph Edra Ukpo, has stated why the federal government of Nigeria is not winning its fight against terrorism in the country.

According to the clergyman, as reported by PUNCH online, unless corruption is wiped out of every aspect of Nigerians' daily life, the  country would find it tough addressing its current security challenges.

The Archbishop made the declaration in Okpoma, the Yala Local Government headquarters in Cross River State  on Sunday, stating that corruption  is severely impeding the effective fight against Islamic insurgents currently ravaging the north east part of the country.

While revealing that Nigeria is ordained by God to be  a great country, Archbisshop Ukpo stated that for the country to attain that status, corruption has to be rooted out to bring about meaningful progress in Nigeria.

“Corruption is what is making it difficult to bring the Boko Haram insurgence to an end and unless we fight corruption it will be difficult for  Nigeria to make much progress as a nation  because it has taken over much of our national life”.

It could be recalled that no fewer than 276 schoolgirls kidnapped on 14 April in Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State are still being held by the Boko Haram sect despite pleas by the Federal Government and the international communities for their release.

The leader of the terror group, Abubakar Shekau, has since released a video on the internet saying he would not release the abducted schoolgirls unless the federal government is ready to swap them with his 'brethren' captured by the Nigerian military.

The Nigerian government has said they are not ready to negotiate with the terrorists, adding that they would do whatever it takes to rescue the schoolgirls from the terrorists.

Over a month after their abduction, the school girls are still not back with their families.
