President Goodluck Jonathan departs to Brussels on Tuesday

President Goodluck Jonathan leaves Abuja for Brussels on April 1, 2014, Tuesday. The Nigerian leader will head the delegation to the fourth European Union-Africa Summit which opens in the capital city of Belgium and of the EU. 

The slogan of the summit is “Investing in People, Prosperity and Peace”.

President Goodluck Jonathan and the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, will focus on stimulating further growth and creating more jobs in Nigeria and other African countries. Bilateral talks with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and some other participating heads of states and governments are being scheduled for April 2, 2014, Wednesday.

Agenda of the summit also includes such crucial topics as education and training, women and youth, legal and illegal migrant flows between Africa and Europe, investments in peace and ways to enhance EU support for African capacities to manage security on the continent.

The Brussels Summit is expected to provide opportunities to review EU-Africa relations based on the 2007 Joint Africa-EU Strategy, adopted in Lisbon, Portugal.

The participants also hope to explore options for greater mutually-beneficial cooperation between Africa and Europe.

The Nigerian delegation will also include the Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga among others.
