Benue Farmers And Fulani Herdsmen Sign Peace Accord

Peace accord ending all hostilities in Benue has been signed by the feuding Benue farmers and leaders of MACBAN, the umbrella body of Fulani herdsmen.

The peace agreement was signed as soon as Dr. Paul Orhii, the Director General of the NAFDAC, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, mentioned the chemical weapons being used in killing more than 200 farmers by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Benue State.

Dr. Orhii stated this in an interview on Monday with Makurdi newsmen in the state capital of Benue, after the relief materials were donated to the victims of crisis at various Makurdi and Guma camps and local government area.

The truce was discussed by mediators at the end of the meeting of the DIG, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mike Zuokumor with his team, the Chairman Benue State Reconciliatory and Peace Building Committee, led by General Atom Kpera along with members of the committee, and the National President of MACBAN, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Bello Modejo with his team. The meeting was held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House.

General Kpera announced the resolution of the meeting with Alhaji Modejo, claiming that the Tiv/Agatu and Fulani agreed to cease any hostilities and to set up a task force to implement the new peace agreement.

They all vowed to find all the criminal elements responsible for fueling the dispute and to tackle the current crisis.

Both feuding parties were urged against taking the law into their hands and were asked to restrain from harassing any individuals.
