PDP Supporters Battle Over South West Zone

It is not the best of time for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as some of its supporters in western Nigeria have dragged themselves to court over what critics believe should have been an internal issue.

According to reports, some aggrieved members of the party have urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to cancel the appointment of the party’s South-West Zone Caretaker Committee.

The plaintiffs in suit No-FHC/L/CS/1150/2013 stated that they remained the valid caretaker committee members by virtue of a court order, adding that PDP could not appoint any other persons to replace them.

The plaintiffs are Ishola Filani (Ekiti State); Chief Pegba Otemolu (Ogun), Adedeji Doherty (Lagos), Rasak Adekonla Akanni (Oyo), Bolaji Jeje (Lagos), Orimolade Olanrewaju (Ondo), Olawunmi Oshinmoluke Yuba (Ogun) and Banji Obasanmi (Ekiti).

Others are Shola Oludipe (Ondo), Lawal Waheed Olatunde (Oyo), Emmanuel Oladejo (Oyo), Olalekan Abubakar (Lagos), Seun Adesanya (Ogun), Semiu Babatunde (Ogun), Prince Tope Ademiluyi (Ekiti), Tunde Olowofoyeku (Osun) and Prince Omoniyi Alo (Ondo).

Citing a judgement delivered in their favour on April 9, 2013, the plaintiffs are asking the court to declare that PDP is not at liberty to dissolve the committee until new officers have been elected.

They also added that their resignation in the committee was to enable them contest for a substantive office during the congress, scheduled to hold on August 24 last year.

They claimed that since the congress did not hold back then that their resignations had no effect.

The plaintiffs asked the court to prevent the PDP from making new appointments in their positions as PDP caretaker committee in the South-West Zone.

Chairman of the former committee, Filani, said the PDP had drawn up a timetable for the congress in June 2013 and fixed the congress for 24 August, 2013.
