ASUP To Hold Nationwide Protest On April 29 Over Government's Insensitivity To Lingering Strike

On Wednesday, April 23, The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) stated that they will stage a nationwide protest on April 29 over so-called government’s insensitivity to its lingering strike.

Dr Chibuzo Asomugha, the National President of the union, said in Abuja that even if the protest doesn't come up on the 29th, then it would be immediately after May Day.

He expressed worries about the consequent shutdown of the nation’s public polytechnics and colleges of education as well as about failure of the Federal Government to meet the demands of ASUP and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

He also added that "the strike should have been suspended about three weeks ago" but the federal government kept mum. Asomugha is sure that with this kind of development, the government doesn't have any measure of sincerity.

Asomugha said the strike which started 10 months ago has lingered and the members are coming under pressure.

During the proposed strike, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics will hold a final meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress and other stakeholders.

In February, at the meeting with the union, Nyesom Wike, Supervising Minister of Education, blamed them in thwarting government’s efforts at resolving the strike.

Later, the government set up another committee with the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, as a head to convince the striking lecturers.
