Senate Pleads With Boko Haram To Free Abducted Schoolgirls

The Nigerian Senate is pleading with the dreaded Boko Haram sect to release over 200 schoolgirls who they kidnapped in a night raid on April 14 in Chibok, Borno state.

At the plenary on Tuesday, May 27 in Abuja, Senate leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, called on the abductors to release the girls in the spirit of the Children’s Day celebration.

"Let me use this opportunity to appeal to Boko Haram to make this day whole for us as a nation. To make this day whole for as humanity by releasing our children in their captivity," the senator said.

While drawing the attention of the senators to the challenges confronting the Nigerian child especially those in the northeast zone of the country, Ndoma-Egba said they can only become true resources and wealth if they are well educated.

He said, "Without education, the children rather than being a resource will become a burden on the society."

He also used the opportunity to congratulate the children of Nigeria and the children of the world on this day which is their day.

Also speaking at the plenary, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, wondered why the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, would say disclose to the public that the military had discovered where the abducted school girls were being held hostage only to describe it as a military secret.

Its been over a month since some school girls were taken hostage by Boko Haram insurgents. This situation has sparked global outrage and the government is still making efforts in collaboration with foreign experts to secure the safe release of the girls.

Security agents have been searching for the girls and yesterday, Alex Badeh, the Chief of Defence Staff revealed that they had spotted the camps where Boko Haram is holding the girls hostage.
