Three months after his emergence as the Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr Friday Benson, Monday, lost the position, as he was impeached by 16 members of the 24-member House.
Mr. Fini Angaye, a former Deputy Speaker during former Governor Timipre Sylva tenure, representing Kolokuma-Opokuma constituency 1, was elected the new Speaker.
But the media aide to the ousted Speaker told Vanguard that the change was effected by 11 members of the House at a closed door sitting.
Media men were barred from the sitting except for AIT and NTA correspondents, who were allowed access to floor of the House.
Proceedings took less than 30 minutes, as the members convened for that singular purpose with the Deputy Speaker, Mr Sam Ateki and the deposed Speaker absent.
The member representing Ogbia Constituency II, Mr Obedience Emoton moved the motion for the impeachment and a former Speaker, Mr Nestor Binabo nominated Angaye, his former deputy for the position, which was accepted by all present.
Binabo, who was Speaker during the tenure of former governor, Timipre Sylva voluntarily vacated his since he comes from the same Bayelsa West Senatorial District with the incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson.
It could not be immediately ascertained if the governor influenced the impeachment, which was carried out under heavy security with policemen guarding the entrance to the Assembly and present all over the Assembly complex.
Though the reason for removal could not be ascertained but the new Speaker, Fini Angaye told newsmen that "Bayelsa State House of Assembly had effected a change," explaining that when members state their problem, it meant that they wanted a change.
